Nicholas the Slide (a wizard that is capable of soul stealing and using souls to project himself into animals) is a magically altered wizard who was created by Sisters of the Dark on the orders of Emperor Jagang. He was created using old books from the great war that Jagang had aquired. Nicholas himself was however just a test of whether he could alter wizards as had been done in the last war. Jagang was able to have the unpredictable Beast created after Nicholas was created and he saw Nicholas as just a distraction to Richard.
Nicholas was the leader of the forces that occupied Bandakar, which was the homeland of the pristinely ungifted descendents of the Lord Rahls. Richard with the aid of the people of Bandakar destroyed the Imperial Order forces in Bandakar and in the process killed Nicholas.
